Claude vs ChatGPT: Pick the Right One for Each Job

Quick answer

Pick Claude or ChatGPT by the job you need done, not by the brand.

  • Claude suits quotes, client emails and long documents
  • ChatGPT makes images and is where most customers ask
  • Each costs US$20 a month for one person
  • Test both on one real job

We build on Claude at UnderCurrent Automations, and we'd still point you to ChatGPT for some jobs. It makes images, and it's where most of your customers already ask their questions.

Below is a job-by-job list, the data rules for each tool, and a one-week test you can run yourself.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for a small business?

Neither one is better at everything, so the useful question is which one is better at this job. At UnderCurrent Automations we use Claude, but your jobs should decide your pick.

Most owners pick one tool, pay for it, then force every task through it. That works until the tool is weak at the task in front of you. Both are good enough for a first draft of almost anything, so the gap shows up in the details. Claude tends to hold a long brief together and keep your tone across a page. ChatGPT has more add-ons, makes pictures and is the one your customers already know.

Both get used for real work. In Anthropic's own study of Australian use, 46% of Claude chats here were for work. The same report found Australians use Claude about four times more than the size of our workforce would predict.

Claude vs ChatGPT: which one for which job?

Claude fits writing jobs best, and ChatGPT fits images and customer reach. Spreadsheets are close, so test both on your own file.

Job Claude ChatGPT Better fit
Quotes and proposals Holds a long brief and your tone Good, needs more editing Claude
Client emails Plain and calm by default Good, can sound salesy Claude
Long documents and contracts Reads the whole file well Good on shorter files Claude
Spreadsheets Edits Google Sheets live Strong at charts and sums Test both
Images for social posts Can't make images Makes images ChatGPT
Microsoft 365 Inside some Copilot tools Powers most of Copilot Whatever you pay for

Treat the last column as a starting point. Microsoft added Claude to parts of Microsoft 365 Copilot in September 2025, so that row keeps moving. Test a job on your own work before you move it across.

Where does Claude earn its place?

Claude earns its place on the jobs where words carry the money, like quotes, follow-ups and reports. It's also what we build our own workflows on.

Claude is the model UnderCurrent uses. We'd change if something better came along, but it works, and switching every month wastes time. We run our own weekly, monthly and quarterly SEO reports on it. Each one is written on a schedule with no person in the loop. If the data is missing, it stops and tells us, instead of sending an empty report. That's the kind of job Claude handles well, a long brief with strict rules.

It also works inside the tools you already use. Claude can read Gmail and edit Google Docs and Sheets in a pane beside the chat. If your business runs on Google Workspace, that matters more than any test score. Our guide to using Claude in an Australian business walks through the setup.

Where does ChatGPT earn its place?

ChatGPT earns its place on images and on reach, because that's where your customers are. It's the AI tool most Australians already use.

Roy Morgan's March 2026 survey counted 10.5 million Australians using ChatGPT in an average four weeks. Claude had 777,000. Telsyte's research, reported by B&T, put the yearly users at 13.8 million and 2.9 million. That gap matters to you as a seller, more than as a writer. Your customers are far more likely to ask ChatGPT about your trade.

We see the same gap on our own site. In August 2026, AI assistants sent us 28 visits, and 24 came from ChatGPT. So even if you write in Claude, check what ChatGPT says about your business, using our guide to how to rank in ChatGPT search. Images are the other clear win. Claude can't make pictures, while ChatGPT has had image generation built in since March 2025.

What happens to the customer details you paste in?

On a personal plan, both tools may train on your chats unless you switch it off. On a business plan, neither trains on your data by default.

Anthropic changed its consumer terms on 28 August 2025. Free, Pro and Max chats can now be used for training if the setting is on. If you allow it, chats are kept for five years. If you opt out, the 30-day limit stays. On ChatGPT, the switch is called "Improve the model for everyone", under Settings, then Data controls.

Business plans work the other way. OpenAI says it doesn't train on ChatGPT Business data by default. Claude's team plans sit under commercial terms, which the consumer change doesn't cover. A business seat is a paid account that your business owns and controls. Our rule for clients is simple. If a staff member pastes customer names or prices, they use a business seat.

Claude vs ChatGPT on price: do you need both?

Most small businesses only need one paid seat per person, plus the free plan of the other. Both personal plans cost US$20 a month before GST and exchange.

Claude Pro is US$20 a month, or US$17 a month paid yearly. A Claude team seat is US$25 a month, or US$20 paid yearly. ChatGPT Plus is also US$20 a month. If you already pay for Microsoft 365 Copilot, check what it includes before you add either one. So the price is a wash, and the job decides it.

The real cost is the wrong tool on a weekly job. Here's a worked example. Say a poor first draft costs you 20 minutes of fixing, five times a week.

What a poor first draft costs in a year an example

  • Hours a year spent fixing drafts, about 87
  • × What your hour is worth, $90
  • = Your time a year, about $7,800

A second US$20 seat is cheap next to that.

How do you test both on your own work?

Give both tools the same real job for one week and keep the one you edit less. Your own work is a better test than any review.

The one-week tool test

  1. Pick one job you do at least three times a week, like quotes.
  2. Write one brief with your prices, tone and an old example.
  3. Paste the same brief into Claude and ChatGPT.
  4. Time how long you spend fixing each draft.
  5. Keep the tool that needs less fixing for that job.

Run it again for your next big job. You may end up with a split, like Claude for quotes and ChatGPT for social images. If ChatGPT gives you old prices or dates, read why ChatGPT's knowledge has a cutoff before you blame the tool.

What does a job-first workflow look like?

A job-first workflow puts one repeat job on the model that suits it, then runs it for you. That's how you get hours back each week.

A workflow is a set of steps that runs on its own once something sets it off. Before UnderCurrent Automations existed, its founder had a sales job where prospecting, research and email drafts ate each day. A workflow took over the research and wrote the first drafts. It saved three hours a day, or 15 hours across a five-day week. The work arrived done, and the only job left was to check it.

We build the same kind of workflow for Australian small businesses, from our Melbourne base and across Australia. If one job eats your week, tell us about it. We'll pick the job with you and price the build before any work starts. We build on Claude, and if your job needs a tool Claude lacks, we'll tell you first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Claude inside Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Yes, in parts of it. In September 2025, Microsoft added Anthropic's Claude models to Microsoft 365 Copilot, first in the Researcher agent and in Copilot Studio. Microsoft said Copilot would keep running on OpenAI's models as well. If your business already pays for Microsoft 365 Copilot, check the model picker before you buy a separate Claude seat. You may already have access to Claude for some research and agent jobs.

Does Claude work with Gmail and Google Docs?

Yes. Claude has Google Workspace connectors for Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. It can search your inbox, draft replies, check your calendar and edit Docs and Sheets live beside the chat. Anthropic says it does not train its models on data from these connectors. For a small business on Google Workspace, this makes Claude easy to fit into the work you already do each day.

Is the free version of ChatGPT or Claude good enough for business?

The free version of ChatGPT or Claude is fine for testing and light use. Both cap how much you can use them, so a busy week will hit the limit. The bigger issue is data. Free plans are personal plans, so your chats may be used for training unless you switch it off. For anything with customer details, use a paid business seat instead.

What is ChatGPT search and does Claude have it?

ChatGPT search is a feature that lets ChatGPT look up live web pages and show links in its answer. It matters for a small business because customers use it to find and compare local services. Claude can also search the web when the feature is turned on. If you want to know how ChatGPT search finds pages, our short definition of ChatGPT search explains it in plain words.

Does ChatGPT search the web for current prices?

ChatGPT can search the web for current prices, but only when search is turned on and it decides to use it. Without search, it answers from training data, which can be months old. That's why a quote draft can show last year's rates. Always paste your own price list into the brief. Our article on whether ChatGPT searches the web explains when it does.

Should my staff use their own AI accounts for work?

Your staff shouldn't use their own AI accounts for work that involves customer details. A personal account is covered by consumer terms, so chats may be used for training and your business can't see or delete them. A business seat keeps the work under your control and out of training by default. Set one simple rule, and write it down where staff will see it.

Hey, I’m Luke, founder of UnderCurrent Automations.

I started UnderCurrent after watching Australian small businesses grind through work they didn’t have to. Now I build the systems that take it off their plate, from lead follow-up and invoicing to the search work that gets a business named by Google and ChatGPT, with most builds live in 14 days.

At UnderCurrent, we build with purpose. We care how something looks, but more about whether it keeps working when nobody’s watching. If your business has outgrown its admin and you want a partner who gets it, let’s talk.
