How to use Claude in your business: the jobs it does well
Claude earns its keep on business operations: reports, checklists, spreadsheets and the emails that go with them. That's what businesses already use it for.
Anthropic studied 1.2 million Cowork sessions from May 2026. The biggest use, at 33.4%, was "business process and operations". Think pulling scattered updates into one report, building onboarding checklists and matching spreadsheets. Few small businesses do this yet. In May 2026, Anthropic also launched Claude for Small Business, which you switch on inside Cowork. It covers jobs like invoice chasing, payroll planning and sales campaigns. It connects to QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Anthropic's own rule for it is a good one: "you approve before anything sends, posts, or pays."

The best Claude Code setup for business operations is one folder per job, a rules file, a few saved skills and a schedule. Claude Code is a tool that reads your files, runs commands and follows the rules you write down.

- Install Claude Code, or open the Code tab in the Claude desktop app. It needs a paid plan.
- Make one folder for the job, like "quotes", with your templates and price list.
- Write a CLAUDE.md file in that folder. Claude Code reads it at the start of every session, so your rules load every time.
- Save each repeat job as a skill, like "chase every quote older than five days".
- Connect your tools through MCP. MCP is an open standard for plugging Claude into apps like Google Drive.
- Put the job on a schedule. Routines run in the cloud, even when your computer is off.

That's true of Claude too. On Free, Pro and Max, you choose whether your chats help train Anthropic's models, and data is kept for five years if you say yes. Team, Enterprise and API use sit under Anthropic's commercial terms, which don't use your inputs for training by default.
The ACSC gives a real warning. In early 2025, a contractor uploaded names, contact details and health records from a government program into an AI system. That was a notifiable data breach. Before anyone pastes customer data, strip the names out, or move the job onto a Team plan. business.gov.au also says a chatbot talking to customers is riskier than AI drafting social posts.

Claude pays for itself when it takes over a job you already spend hours on each week. Pro costs US$200 a year on yearly billing. The bigger cost is your time, so here's a worked example, not a client result.
