AI Citation

An AI citation is when an AI engine names your business or links your page inside its generated answer, instead of in a list of links below it.

Most Australian SMBs are still asking the wrong question. The weekly report shows "we moved from position 6 to position 3 on blocked drains Melbourne", the owner is happy, the agency invoices, and nobody notices that 22% of the searches for that query now end inside an AI Overview that does not cite the business at all. Position is a 2019 metric. The 2026 metric is citation rate: of every AI answer generated on your service queries, what percentage name you as a source.

The shift is load-bearing for three reasons. First, clicks. SISTRIX's March 2026 analysis found pages cited inside a Google AI Overview earned roughly 35% more clicks than the same page sitting at position one on a query with no Overview present. Second, zero-click reality. Pew Research measured click-through at around 8% when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not, so a non-cited page on an Overview query loses traffic even if it ranks. Third, trust-by-association. When ChatGPT Search, Perplexity or Claude name a source inside an answer, the engine is effectively vouching for it. A classic blue link offers no such endorsement.

Citation is also harder to fake. Perplexity's published sourcing approach and Google's AI Mode draw from a smaller, more E-E-A-T-weighted pool than the top ten organic results. Paid links and thin keyword pages that move a ranking do not move a citation rate. Deep topical coverage, consistent entity signals and clean structured data do.

Concrete: a Brisbane physio cited in two Google AI Overviews and one Perplexity answer for runner-injury queries in their postcode is pulling roughly 35% more booked enquiries than the same physio at position one on the same queries with no Overview present. Same content, different surface, larger effect.

Earning citations is the actual job of Answer Engine Optimisation, Generative Engine Optimisation and AI Search Optimisation. UnderCurrent Automations measures citation rate across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity and Claude as the headline metric, not keyword position.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI citation more valuable than a position-one ranking?

For most service queries in 2026, yes. SISTRIX's March 2026 analysis found pages cited inside a Google AI Overview pulled around 35% more clicks than the same page sitting at position one when no Overview appeared. The citation also earns trust-by-association, the AI is effectively vouching for the source, which a classic ranking does not.

How do I know if my business is being cited?

Run your top service queries through Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity and Claude, and record which sources each answer cites. Most Australian SMBs sit at 0% citation rate on their own service queries while still tracking keyword rankings. The citation rate is the metric that matters now.

Why are AI citations harder to manipulate than rankings?

Citations are picked from a smaller, more E-E-A-T-weighted pool than the top ten classic results. The engines favour sources with consistent entity signals, deep topical coverage and clean structured data, the signals are harder to fake than backlinks, so paid link tactics that move a ranking do not move a citation rate.
